Artist in Residence at Ballyfin Demesne, December 2025 and June 2026
Set in sweeping parkland and surrounded by breathtaking views, Ballyfin Demesne is a 5* hotel located at the foot of the Slieve Bloom mountains. Just over an hour from Dublin, this vast family-owned estate in County Laois is an extraordinary treasure hidden away in the Irish landscape.
Rich in history, comfort and activities, Ballyfin supports the arts through its extensive art collection and also its Artist in Residence programme. I was lucky enough to have been invited to be the Ballyfin Artist in Residence in 2025 and 2026. These two separate periods of time were key in relation to my work on The Keeping, the centre piece for my Filial Love solo exhibition which was shown in the RHA in Dublin from 12th February - 30th March 2026, as well as other ongoing projects.

In December 2025, during my first Residency at Ballyfin, I had free rein to explore and forage from the incredible grounds surrounding the hotel. I also had dedicated space to continue design work on The Keeping, a life-size cloak that I was designing for my Filial Love exhibition which would open in Dublin a few months later.
The Keeping is a sculptural cloak composed of dried flowers embedded in resin, positioned in dialogue with a granite boulder. The cloak was made to size for my mother and the flowers were all foraged from her garden over a two year period. The Keeping was inspired by the tradition of cloaks handed down from mother to daughter at the time of marriage. It invites us to consider ideas around ownership and nurturing, reflecting time invested, craftsmanship and caring attention, while the elements included form a meditation on protection, labour and enduring care - personal, generational and ecological.

It was such a thrill to return to Ballyfin in June 2026 with The Keeping! It looked incredible located in the Front Hall, positioned on an ancient, intricate Roman mosaic floor from the ruins of Pompeii, Italy.
During this second residency I also continued foraging flowers and plants to incorporate into a piece that I am designing and making for use in Ballyfin - I can’t wait to finish it and present it to the team there!
With thanks to Oliver Sears Gallery and the team at Ballyfin.
